Our History

The growth of European urban centers, coupled with the development of wholesale and retail trade, led most of these European countries during the 1960s and early 1970s to undertake modernization and development of wholesale goods markets which were traditionally located in the center of the city. Concerns about urban planning, the growth of road freight traffic and the very development of the transport network have led to these infrastructures being gradually installed on the outskirts of major cities.

In Portugal, thanks to a set of circumstances that was not alien to the political environment that existed in the 1960s and early 1970s, and the very difficulty of making available the financial resources necessary to accompany the process then underway in Europe, the Wholesale Markets, in the national terminology as Supply Markets, essentially maintained the structure resulting from the few investments they made during the 1930s. They thus constituted spaces that functioned in a perfectly “spontaneous” regime, or structures that were still located in the center of without conditions of hygiene, sanitation or logistics for the functions they were called to perform.

The Portuguese Wholesale Markets constituted, therefore, blocking infrastructures in the process of modernization and improvement of the efficiency of the distribution circuits, and a factor of disturbance of the organization of the urban life, conditioning even indispensable actions for its ordering. This situation was particularly acute in the Lisbon region, where existing structures were clearly unable to meet the growing needs of urban life and the evolution of consumption and food distribution.

It is in this context that, in 1991, the Government, through the Resolution of the Council of Ministers 16/91 of May 15, made an unequivocal decision to support the process of setting up a set of Wholesale Markets at national level, in which the Lisbon region took priority basis.

In 1993, when it was set up, SIMAB, SA essentially aimed to set up a set of modern supply markets, which should form the national network of supplier markets created as a strategic set of modern Logistics Centers and Food distribution. Over the years, these platforms have become real poles of economic development, fundamental in supporting national production, organizing and modernizing trade.

In the same way, over time, the Group sold some of its shareholdings (2011 – Coimbra Region’s Wholesale Market, 2008 – Faro Municipal Market, 2006 – Cova da Beira Market), maintaining others, and was subject to actions aimed at their total privatization.

SIMAB is today the majority shareholder of the Lisbon Region’s Wholesale Market (MARL), the BragaRegion’s Wholesale Market (MARB), the Évora Region’s Wholesale Market (MARÉ) and the Faro Region’s Wholesale Market (MARF).
